Infant School Curriculum

Children can enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum at Olton Primary and our staff are  always looking for new ways to excite and engage the children in their learning. Curriculum overviews for each year group are available on the school website to enable parents to have a clear understanding of the topics and content the children will cover each term.

Our children are encouraged to become increasingly independent learners and as they enter Year 1, they are supported to select appropriate challenges and tasks appropriate to their level of understanding and interests.

We believe that the curriculum should inspire children and enable them to develop important learning skills that will support them in their journey of lifelong learning. Whilst ensuring all of the requirements of the National Curriculum are met, we strive to build a creative and exciting curriculum that links different areas of learning together and allows children to apply their skills in different areas. All of our teaching is informed by detailed assessment and this information will be shared with parents at regular intervals throughout the year.

Children with particular needs are supported by specific staff who will work in class or with
individuals/groups outside of the classroom. We design intervention groups to meet the needs of the children and so these groups are quite fluid from one term to the next. This work is coordinated by the SENDCo.

Key Stage 1 Curriculum
Our curriculum is built around the needs of our pupils and is always evolving. It is designed to allow children to become active learners and giving them the skills they need to learn independently.

The Statutory National Curriculum currently specifies that at Key Stage 1 we teach the following subjects:

English      Maths      Science        ICT/Computing       History        Geography      Music         Religious Education      Art        Physical Education    Design Technology

 Personal Health and Social Education

Within the statutory framework we link subjects, skills and content creatively through termly themes. Curriculum overviews are provided to parents at the start of each term.

Our curriculum is designed so that whilst gaining knowledge, children are also becoming
successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. The aim is to develop
knowledge and skills as well as attitudes and attributes that will serve them well as they
progress through their educational career and the rest of their lives.

To enhance the curriculum, the children explore the local environment and go on trips and
visits e.g. Umberslade Farm, Kenilworth Castle, Think Tank.
