    Dear Parents/Carers/Children,

We are delighted to invite children from across the school to take part in a variety of Easter and Spring competitions at Olton and we know that our children enjoy taking part in these activities. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category and for each phase.

    EASTER COMPETITONS 2024

Children may enter the various Competitions as shown below. Any child can enter any category, regardless of year group, allowing children to build on skills year on year.

It is important that entries are brought into school on Friday 22nd March 2024, with your child’s name either on the reverse or somewhere discrete. We shall post photographs on School Dojo.

Category 1: Egg(s) in a scene – a blown or hard-boiled egg(s) within a scene of your choice - be as creative as you like. Why not create for favourite superhero, book character or even a teacher?

Category 2: An Easter Garden/Spring garden, modern or traditional, using a range of real plants/grass, twigs, stones, etc. (see image below – lots of ideas can be safely googled!).

Category 3: Easter Bonnets - create a spring inspired hat.

Category 4: A decorated cake. We know that Olton has the best bakers! Why not have a go at decorating a spring or Easter inspired cake.

    Best wishes.

  • Scarlet Fever

    Mon 11 Mar 2024

    Dear Parent/Carer,

We have been informed that a couple of children who attend Olton have been diagnosed with suspected/confirmed scarlet fever.

Although scarlet fever is usually a mild illness, it should be treated with antibiotics to minimise the risk of complications and reduce the spread to others.

The symptoms of scarlet fever include a sore throat, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting. This is followed by a fine red rash which typically first appears on the chest and stomach, rapidly spreading to other parts of the body. On more darkly-pigmented skin, the scarlet rash may be harder to spot, but it should feel like 'sandpaper'. The face can be flushed red but pale around the mouth.

If you think you, or your child, have scarlet fever:

    ·       See your GP or contact NHS 111 as soon as possible

    ·       Make sure that you/your child takes the full course of any antibiotics prescribed by the doctor.

    ·       Stay at home, away from nursery, school or work for at least 24 hours after starting the antibiotic treatment, to avoid spreading the infection.

    Complications

Children who have had chickenpox recently are more likely to develop more serious infection during an outbreak of scarlet fever and so parents should remain vigilant for symptoms such as a persistent high fever, cellulitis (skin infection) and arthritis (joint pain and swelling). If you are concerned for any reason please seek medical assistance immediately.

If your child has an underlying condition which affects their immune system, you should contact your GP or hospital doctor to discuss whether any additional measures are needed.

Further advice can be obtained from the Health Protection Team on 0300 303 8162 during office hours.

    Yours sincerely,

  • Reminder - World Book Day – Thursday 7th March 2024

    Thu 07 Mar 2024

    29th January 2024

    Dear Parents/Carers,

As I am sure many of you are aware, it is rapidly approaching the time of year for us to celebrate children’s literature. Each year, we focus upon a different aspect of children’s literature and this year we will be focusing upon traditional tales. There are so many different traditional tales and many that children will know and love. Each year group will be focusing on a different traditional tale during the day and will be completing lots of exciting activities based on this tale including drama, art and craft as well as comparing tales and writing their own ‘mixed up’ versions.

Dressing Up Day – Thursday 7th March

As part of our celebration of children’s literature, we will be hosting our annual ‘dressing up’ day where the children can come to school as one of their favourite book characters. We do ask that children dress appropriately for the weather and are wearing sensible shoes. Please do not go to any extra expense towards the clothes your child wears on this day, try to be as creative as possible with items you already have at home.

Some of these may include Diary of a Wimpy Kid (own clothes), Winnie the Witch (witch outfit from Halloween), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (own clothes with a golden ticket), Matilda (school uniform) and many more can be found online.

Please can you ensure that you have spoken to your child about the character which they have chosen to dress up as so that this can be shared in classes on World Book Day.

World Book Day £1 voucher and books.

This is a reminder that if you would like your child to bring home one of the £1 books on World Book Day rather than the £1 voucher, please ensure you have pre-ordered the book using the Microsoft Form link https://forms.office.com/e/c9BHUctA69

We must receive your orders by Thursday 1st February 2024. If we haven't received an order from you by this date, we will presume that you do not wish to pre-order and so your child will receive a voucher on the day instead.

On the World Book Day website, they have all the books on offer to us and when you click on each one, it will provide some information about the book and a short video from the author. Please take some time to look through the books and help your child decide which book they would like in exchange for the £1 voucher.

    https://www.worldbookday.com/books-and-tokens/books/

This is a fabulous opportunity and I am sure lots of you will take up the opportunity to pre-order these books.

    Competitions

This year we will be running two competitions across the school all about books. Please can competition entries be brought into school on Wednesday 6th March so that we are able to share these with each other and judge the winners.

Any child can enter any category, regardless of year group. Please ensure your child’s name and class is either on the reverse or somewhere discrete.

We shall post photographs on School Dojo.

Category 1: Design your own bookmark – this can be based upon a favourite book character or series of books or images that inspire reading.

Category 2: Story in a box – Using any craft materials or items you have at home to create your favourite story inside a box (see images below – lots of interesting ideas can be safely googled!).

    Yours sincerely,

    Miss F Jordan

    Assistant Head
